The Queensland government has forced the closure of a domestic violence centre on Palm Island. The Kootana women’s centre had its funding removed in 2009 after the state government determined it was not being spent effectively, and last week a court order ended their 25 year control of the service with an eviction. A tender process has begun for prospective operators. However, the centre has long enjoyed community support, and questions are being asked as to whether the new tender process will result in a better service.
