Palm Island report gives Queensland Police ultimatum
The Queensland Crime and Miscionduct commission today handed down a long awaited report into the Mulrunji Domadgee death in custody case on Palm Island in 2004. The report was strongly critical of the police handling of the issue and has given the police commissioner 14 days to make clear what action he intends to take against six officers involved in the case. Police Commissioner Atkinson responded on Youtube and his address seemed to imply that some action will be taken against the police officers. The officers could face charges as serious as perverting the course of justice , but community activist Sam Watson is cynical and says its time for a Royal Commission. Palm Island mayor Alfred Lacey says he’s also not sure the report will lead to the sort of justice Palm Islanders would like to see.
