Palm Island residents have been fighting since 2004 for acknowledgement and reparations for suffering following the death of Cameron Doomadgee in police custody.

The path to apology and compensation has been long and has seen criminal cases, inquests, a complaint lodged with the Human Rights Commission and a failed conciliation process.

A class action filed in 2013 finally achieved settlement on 15 June 2018.
