The military still holds many of the levers of power in Egypt, and that may stymie any big shifts in foreign policy.But the defeat of the military’s candidate in the election shows that the country has taken at least a step towards democracy.

Mohammed Mursi, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate has been declared the winner of the Egypt’s first democratic election in the wake of the revolution that ended the country’s military dictatorship. As Egyptians celebrated, some Palestinians joined in. They hope that their neighbour will now become a closer ally in their struggle against Israel.
