The visa of Palestinian activist Bassem Tamimi has been revoked only one day before he was due to arrive in Australia on a speaking tour.

The immigration department has said it made the decision to maintain public order and does not intend to set limitations on free speech.

But activists say this rings hollow in light of the recent freedom of expression debate in parliament and legal experts say it highlights the glaring lack of individual rights provided for in the law.
