Oxfam says indigenous people need to help themselves
After launching a controversial campaign to end child sexual abuse in indigenous communities, the Government has recieved intense criticism from community groups. Today they succumbed to the mounting pressure by assuring the public that what were initially compulsory health checks for indigenous children, will no longer be enforced but will be strongly recommended. Oxfam was one of many instrumental organisations who went straight to the Government with their concerns over the plans to curb child sexual abuse in indigenous communities. Andrew Hewitt, Executive Director of Oxfam Australia, explains Oxfam’s response to the indigenous community action plan.
