Turkish Social Security Minister Faruk Çelik’s announcement last week in parliamentary question time reveals a dark reality about the country’s mining industry. 13,510 deaths occurred on work sites across Turkey between 2002 and 2013. For a population that has been dealing with mining crises for years, this statistic puts a number on an all too often experienced tragedy.
