Ongoing protests in Burma
Today 10,000 Burmese citizens marched in Rangoon in a peaceful protest against the ruling military junta. The gathering today, led by 5,000 monks, follows weekend protests that saw 20 thousand people throng through the streets of Rangoon, chanting prayers and shouting slogans. The weekend gathering represents the largest protest that the country has seen in 20 years. However unlike the violent crackdown perpetrated by the military leaders that followed the pro-Democracy marches of 1988, most protesters have been allowed to continue unmolested, with rolling marches taking place for the past week. While the initial rallying point of protests has been the house of detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, monks are now play a leading role in pushing the movement forward in stark defiance with the military dictatorship that has ruled the country for 35 years.
