Labor candidate Linda Burney has made history this federal election, becoming the first Aboriginal woman to be elected to the House of Representatives.

Ms Burney won the seat of Barton in Sydney’s inner south from Liberal MP Nickolas Varvaris on Saturday night.

Her election came at a fitting time – just ahead of NAIDOC Week, which is running until this Sunday to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Indigenous Australians.
