One month on: Protestors still held in Mexico
Media attention in recent weeks has focused on the plight of prisoners in Iraq but a much less publicized case is unfolding in the jails of Guadalajara Mexico. Eighteen protesters advocating fair trade practices in place of free trade, are currently being held in detention a month after their arrest following the Third Summit for European Union and Latin American heads of state. They haven’t been given any indication of when they’re to be released in yet another example of governments worldwide getting tough on activism and dissent. International protestors were deported including Sydney student, Roxana Bestrin Fuentes. She’s currently raising awareness about those still in prison and urging community groups to put pressure on the Mexican consulate to demand their release. Paulina Vidal spoke to Roxana and Irena Arellano photographer with Indymedia in Mexico and member of the Carlos Juliani libertarian collective.
