A large percentage of elderly people are depressed and Beyond Blue director Leonie Young says that the numbers are really believed to be much higher because the problem goes unrecognised by family and the institutions that many older people reside in. A pilot project being conducted in South Australia over the next six months will send older workers out to talk to elderly people and raise awareness of the problem. Bill Ingram is one of those involved and he says the message is much easier to get across to people when it comes from someone in their own age group.
