Offshore processing against spirit of Refugee Convention: international expert
Australia’s longstanding offshore processing policy has been left in disarray after the High Court struck down the swap deal with Malaysia. But just as the situation was looking grim for the Gillard Government it’s been courted by both the Coalition and the Greens with offers to help it solve its policy dilemma, albeit in very different ways.
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has offered to cut a deal with the Government to help it pass news laws to shore up an offshore processing regime. Greens leader Bob Brown has today made a counter-offer to give the Government the numbers to implement policy to process asylum seekers in Australia. It’s unclear when the Government will announce who it will side with.
