It is widely known that to close the life expectancy gap between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians, adequate health care services are needed within rural and remote Indigenous communities. However to get health professionals to work in rural and remote settings is easier said than done. According to Ged Kearney of the Australian Nurses Federation, this is an issue because nurses are the back bone of rural health services. The Nurses Federation also called on the government to reinstate the Racial Discrimination Act in the Northern Territory.
