Nuclear waste facility at remote Muckaty station up for debate
Parliament resumed in Canberra this week, and one of the first items politicians will be debating is a bill that’s caused deep divisions in the Northern Territory cattle station of Muckaty. Tomorrow the National Radioactive Waste Management Bill is on the agenda.
It names the remote station as Australia’s preferred site for a nuclear waste management facility, a nomination that’s angered many locals who say they weren’t consulted. The dispute over the status of this land is currently before the federal court. The Greens are accusing the government of trying to push the legislation through parliament without waiting to see whether the site was fairly nominated by traditional owners in the first place.
