Three months ago, Federal parliament passed 500 pages of legislation to intervene in the Northern Territory’s Indigenous communities in the interests of child protection. Supporters of the policy say drastic action was needed to protect children from abuse. Opponents believe the laws are at best racist and at worst a thinly veiled attempt at assimilation. Tomorrow we’ll hear from Dr Sue Gordon, who heads up the intervention taskforce in the Top End. But today, The Wire’s Eleanor Bell has compiled this report looking at the impact of the legislation, three months on.
