NT budget a mixed bag for indigenous Territorians
ATSIC representatives in the Northern Territory have welcomed the budget released yesterday by the Martin government, but say the legislation does not go far enough to address indigenous disadvantage. Commissioner Akururuyu Hill says the budget includes a number of positive initiatives, such as an Indigenous Economic Development Strategy, and an Accelerated Literacy Program. But he says greater measures to curb indigenous incarceration rates are needed. Other indigenous-specific initiatives include the Community Harmony Strategy, and Community Law and Justice Programs. Commissioner Hill says while there are some good health initiatives in the legislation, the overall state of the sector must be addressed. And he welcomes an Indigenous Economic Development Strategy devised in consultation with the community.
