From next year, NSW Public Schools will be required to deliver a phonics-focused approach to teaching reading for primary students, after NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell announced that the readings wars were over. The victory comes after multiple studies have highlighted that phonics help children to understand sound-letter relationships so that they can read words accurately without guessing from the context or pictures.
