The prime minister is planning the week-long stay in Western Sydney as political observers say that Labor is bleeding from its support base in an area that was traditionally labor heartland.As one government minister pointed out today, people in Western Sydney are exasperated by the long commute to jobs that are often located in the inner city.It’s a frustration shared by residents in the outer suburbs of all our cities.But experts say that there is no quick-fix policy announcement that’s likely to solve Labor’s problems at the same time as delivering real solutions for the people in Sydney’s west. As Julia Gillard heads to Sydney’s West for a week of campaigning, experts say that the region’s biggest gripes – transport and the long commute to work – are unlikely to be successfully addressed by a flashy infrastructure announcement.
