New report calls for urgent action on Great Barrier Reef

The federal government has developed the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan, however scientists say this response is inadequate. Scientists are calling on the government to address the major stressors on the reef, including mining – as Indian mining giant Adani attempts to build the biggest coal mine in the nearby Galilee Basin – and what is described as ‘the elephant in the room’ climate change.

Leading coral reef scientists have released a report looking at the future of the Great Barrier Reef. The report found that the current damage to the reef can be reversed if the government acts now.
