The Federal Government is again being pressured to investigate tax exemptions for churches and charities. A senate committee was established in June following Senator Nick Xenophon’s push that tax-free organisations earn their status by proving they benefit the community. The committee found that billions of dollars are hidden under the charity and religion banner and not being accounted for. It has now gone one step further and proposed a national charities commission be established to further monitor and assess the groups.
