When it comes to the future of the River Murray, the debate swirls around a single number – the amount of water needed to restore the river to health. At the number being considered is 2800 gigalitres, but it’s a number that pleases neither irrigators or environmentalists.
Professor Mike Young suggests that using a single figure on a complex system is simplistic and proven to not work. He suggests outcome based modelling that could show the specific effects of water releases.
