The proposed laws to combat ‘home-grown’ terrorism have been denounced by Islamic community groups, who feel they will be adversely affected. Civil libertarians are also angered by the legislation which will see people returning from Syria and Iraq needing to prove their ‘innocence’, and the Government’s long-term storage of our metadata. Dr Scott Burchill says the threat of local terrorism is overstated and the new laws should be approached with skepticism. However, Professor Greg Barton argues that there is a risk that needs to be addressed.
