Violent clashes defined this year’s Nakba demonstrations in the Middle East, as Palestinians gathered to commemorate 63 years since the state of Israel was formed. Nakba – meaning ‘catastrophe’ in Arabic – is usually a fairly peaceful affair, but this year’s anniversary was an exception. Twelve protestors were killed and thousands more wounded when hoards of refugees were confronted by Israeli forces on three of Israel’s borders.
