Muslim heroines – new book about the women fighting for female rights in the Islamic world
When Ida Lichter lived in an area of London highly populated by Muslims she came into contact with women who challenged the stereotypical image she had of submissive burqa clad women there to do their husband’s bidding. Instead the women she got to know were a vibrant, intellectual group who are passionate about the changing the lot of Muslim women everywhere. She’s now written an homage to Muslim women reformers across the world, who have in many cases risked their lives for their cause. Ida told the Wire’s Catherine Zengerer what happened when an Afghani woman running literacy programs for girls confronted the Mullah who had called for her to be killed.
