Ownership of 70 percent of Australia’s newspapers is about to be transferred to a foreign company, but the mainstream media has barely noticed. The move is not a media takeover. Instead, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation is about to be taken off the Australian Stock Exchange and listed on the New York Stock Exchange. While some claim that it’s concentration of media ownership, not foreign ownership that we should be concerned about, the Greens say that it’s unacceptable for the majority of Australia’s newspapers to be under foreign control. Erica Vowles spoke to Lead NSW Senate Candidate for the Greens, John Kaye about why this issue has gained so little attention.
