The final block of Yugoslavia fell over the weekend as Montenegro voted itself out of its federation with Serbia. Unlike the secessions of the former Yugoslav Republics of Croatia and Bosnia, this breakaway is expected to be a peaceful one with the independence vote supervised by the European Union. With its reliance on international aid joining the European Union could be the first goal of the newly indepdendent Montenegro. Aleksander Pavkovic, associate professor of politics at Macquarie University, says that whilst the independence from Serbia will not speed up Montenegro’s EU aspirations, the country is keen to enter the Union.
