Epidemiologist Richard Eckersley has co-produced an index of well being which indicates that quality of life and standard of living are not the same thing. He says it begins to explain the epidemic of depression in the materially well off West. He believes the increasing interest of voters in issues like the environment is a sign of a new worldview emerging in the West, and that by the next election we’ll see significant changes in what people think is important.
