A former moderate president of Iran is running for the top job in this year’s June elections. Mohammad Khatami is known for his progressive stance towards foreign relations with the west, democracy and women’s rights. Iran is a theocracy and a democratic republic; which means that whilst there are elections for parliament and presidency, candidates are vetted by jurists and clerics, and ultimate power over military, security and the media rests with the Supreme Leader- Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. So will a potential moderate as President of Iran be able to take the country in a more progressive direction?
