The movement to reform the Constitution to recognize Indigenous Australia is gaining momentum, but there are mixed reactions to the process among indigenous communities. Consultations have been held around the nation to gauge community sentiment on the issue. With 45 days until the panel is due to report its findings to Government, consultations will be held in NSW this month.
But the state’s Indigenous leaders appear divided on the issue.Academic and lawyer Nicole Watson told a community forum she cannot support constitutional reforms so long as the Government is instigating forced settlement of Indigenous people in the Northern Territory.
