A mine site in the Tarkine wilderness has stopped operations just six months citing falling ore prices and the low Aussie dollar as reasons for the decision. For environmentalists the news is bitter-sweet because the mine has already caused damage through land clearance and construction of acid waste pools. It also isn’t clear how soon the company will be expected to clean up the wilderness.
