Middle East Respiratory Syndrome – or MERS – has claimed almost 500 lives since first emerging in Saudi Arabia three years ago. Today, it has spread to 26 countries, including those neighbouring Australia, with South Korea facing a MERS outbreak that has infected more than 170 people and killing 27. Australia has no known cases of MERS, but experts believe it could simply be a matter of time and a plane ride away.
