Maralinga – for Indigenous people it’s a word that resonates with horror. The British bomb testing in the 1950’s didn’t just drive the Anangu from their lands – it poisoned those homelands and killed many of their people. In spite of a Royal commission in the eighties and a supposed cleanup of the lands its very much a story that isn’t yet completely told. Author Christobel Mattingleyhas spent two years working with Anangu elders, collecting their memories of the tremendous events they lived through in the 20th century. The result is a lavishly illustrated book that looks like a children’s book except for the horror stories within.
