Mega-dams pushed ahead in Chile
Patagonia is known for its turbulent rivers, majestic glaciers and serene beauty. But approval to build five hydro electric dams on two of the region’s biggest rivers may change that picture. Earlier this month an environmental committee voted to give the $2.9 billion hydro electric dam project the green light. The venture is expected to boost Chile’s energy supply and bring thousands of new jobs to the area. But activists say the controversial power plant will create an ecological disaster. Over 40 local and international conservation groups have joined the campaign to stop the dams meanwhile mass protests across Chile have been taking place ever since the decision was made.
