Immigration minister Peter Dutton is ending welfare assistance to asylum seekers from Nauru and Manus Islands living in Australia for medical treatment.

It’s a move that’s been criticised as unnecessary and mean-spirited, but lawyer Michael Bradley believes the government’s move is motivated by a fear of asylum seeker cases getting into court, in case offshore detention is found to be illegal.
