Senator Helen Coonan has been pushing a strong agenda for media law reform. according to the Minister for Communication, digital technology is pointing towards the future, and changes to media ownership are long overdue. But journalist Margaret Simons seems to think there’s a crucial difference that’s being glossed over in all this discussion about law reform – the importance of having different voices, and the fundamental difference between media and journalism. The media law reforms could result in a culminated ownership of Channel 9 and Fairfax.
