The decision to return water to the Murray river system has produced a lot of controversy and emotion over the past couple of years. Farmers and environmentalists have run passionate campaigns about the amount of water that should or shouldn’t be returned to the system. The current figure of two thousand seven hundred and fifty gigalitres seems to please noone. But independent member of the Murray Darling Basin Commission Profesor Barry Hart is optimistic about the future of the river.

He’s been attending round table meetings in country areas as the authority consults on the plan, and says that discussions behind the scenes are much more level headed than the media would have us believe. He defends the current plan against accusations of not being based on soilid scientific modelling.
