Collingwood Football Club President Eddie McGuire caused a furor in Australian media this week for his controversial comments about journalist Caroline Wilson.

McGuire joked about drowning The Age’s chief football reporter last Monday during a radio segment. But it wasn’t until an all-female AFL commentary podcast, Outer Sanctum, discussed the comments on their program last Thursday, that the mainstream media took notice. Podcast producer Nicole Hayes says McGuire’s comments reflect a wider culture of sexism in the sport, and more education is needed to create a fair and respectful playing field.
