The town of St George in Queensland is set to narrowly avoid a flood disaster, with its hastily constructed system of levees now predicted to be sufficient to hold back the deluge.

The peak of the flood has been revised downwards, but the mayor, Donna Stewart, is asking people not to return to their houses.
