A wave of environmental protests have been taking place across New South Wales today, which were planned to coincide with the release of the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report. Hundreds of coal seam gas protesters were arrested at a property near Bentley, just 15 kilometres north-west of Lismore.

Similar disruptions were occurring at Whitehaven Coal’s Maules Creek Mine where protesters entered the Leard State Forest and began occupying trucks and road rollers in a bid to stop mine workers from clearing the land.Image: lockthegate on Flickr. Whitehaven received final government approval for its open-cut mine project at Maules Creek last year but the development has been plagued with controversy and are even subject to criminal investigations.
