The Australian Capital Territory successfully passed a bill for same-sex marriage today, but not everything went according to plan. In a bid to strengthen the bill against any possible High Court appeals, vital wording was removed that now excludes intersex people. Intersex is the recognition of people who don’t identify as male or female, or people who identify as both. This vital amendment means intersex people who campaigned for same-sex marriage in the ACT were effectively excluded at the last minute.
