Over a million people took to the streets of Washington on Sunday, representing the biggest demonstration in US history, and raising the stakes against President George Bush’s anti-abortion policies. The March for Women’s lives took place with support from Senator Hillary Clinton, former US Secretary of State, Madeline Albright, and actors such as the original Wonder Woman, Linda Carter, Whoopi Goldberg, Julianne Moore and Kirsten Dunst. Concerns have been raised by two recently passed laws, one banning late-term Abortions, and another entitled the “Unborn Victims Violence Act” which moves to grant the foetus or embryo separate legal status as early as the moment after conception. Potentially this could set a precedent where women could be charged with a criminal offence for terminating a pregnancy. Cinnamon Nippard spoke to Erin Mahoney, Chair of the National Organisation for Women, and the New York State Reproductive Rights Task Force, who was at the rally.
