Over 60 years ago, indigenous land in northern South Australia was used to test nuclear weapons. Since then major health problems and even death have followed. Adding to previous compensation for survivors, this week’s federal budget includes a gold pass for people suffering the effects of the testing all those years ago, but the timing of the initiative has people asking “Why now?”
