The United Nations Human Rights Council passed a historic resolution. It is the first time in UN history that gender identity and sexual orientation have been formally acknowledged as cause of violation. The Human Rights High Commissioner will now issue a study into the area, with findings due next March. South Africa and Brazil presented the resolution, indicating that those who do not fit into mainstream society – such as lesbian, gay, trans and bi populations – are among societies most vulnerable.
