Climate change policy and broadband have been spared scrutiny on the basis that they are 'bulletproof'. Meanwhile cuts to foreign aid and the re-phasing of the River Murray water buyback will save the Budget bottom line. Political economist Professor John Quiggin says voters continue to believe the country is doing it tough and the economy needs saving in spite of evidence to the contrary.

The Coalition has finally released the figures which show how it plans to pay for its core election promises. They’ve been immediately criticised as vague and light on detail, and the two key policies have deliberately not been independently costed.
