Fairfax announced yesterday it will be cutting 500 journalists’ jobs across Australia, citing the need for a modern media organisation to be ‘lean and agile’. Associate Professor Wendy Bacon from UTS says it’s already a lot leaner and meaner than when she worked for Fairfax. She says less journalists mean the ones that are there are chained to their desks, and the outsourcing of sub editing means its difficult for an independent journalistic culture to develop.
