September 11 marks one of the most unprecedented days in the world’s history, with Al-Qaeda’s terrorist attacks on the US.
More than two decades later, the attacks remind us not only of this tragic event, but of its legacies: more than two decades of war, conflict and invasion in the Middle Eastern region.
But Afghanistan was particularly hit hard by these legacies. After two decades of war, the US’s decision to withdraw troops sparked a humanitarian crisis, and enabled the Taliban to rise to government by August 2021 within a few months.
