When the Abbott government came in to power it announced that mental health was a key priority. They charged the National Mental Health Commission with reviewing the system and recommending how it could be fixed. Last November the commission delivered its report to the government yet they have sat on it for five months, that was until yesterday when it was leaked to the media. While it was only a summary of the report that was released it did show there are vast shortfalls in the mental health system and despite $10bn a year being spent on services there is no actual way we can measure what is and is not working.
