The Government and ALP have hurriedly passed the revised data retention act, with a provision to protect journalists sources. But this only covers a so called “professional” journalists and who knows what that means. Worse still, future changes can be made without reference to the parliament. Amendments to protect Lawyer-client privilege or doctor-patient details were also knocked back as the legislation was rammed through. Should we feel safe from terrorism? It didn’t help in the Charlie Hebdo case.
