Mark Latham’s popularity took a big hit this week, and most people put it down to his comments on Iraq. It seems foreign policy is still a poison challis for the Labor Party. Yesterday Latham made a major foreign policy speech in Sydney. He emphasised engagement with Asia, a more independent stance from the US and the value of multilateral institutions like the UN. It sounded a lot like the policy from the Hawke Keating era and it was predictably slammed by Foreign Minister Alexander Downer. Liberal-turned-Democrat political commentator Greg Barnes gave The Wire his interpretation.
