‘Largest radioactive waste dump on earth’ gets federal go-ahead

BHP has received the environmental approval from the federal government for its proposed expansion of the Olympic Dam mine in South Australia. The Australian Greens say that the expansion will create the biggest radioactive waste dump on the face of the earth.

The federal environment minister insists that the mine will be required to meet conditions that ensure it follows world’s best practice uranium mining techniques, but some experts are concerned about the way the radioactive waste on the site will be managed.
